Unicode Fancy Text Compatibility Guide

Which styles travel well, which do not, and how to reason about compatibility without pretending it can be predicted exactly.

Compatibility is a range, not a yes or no

Whether a style works depends on the reader’s operating system, its font set, the app, the specific field, and the platform’s own validation rules. Any site claiming a definitive compatibility table for every platform is guessing. What follows is a reasoned ranking, not a guarantee.

Generally the most reliable

These have the broadest font coverage across current systems.

  • Bold and italic serif, and bold italic.
  • Sans-serif variants, including bold and italic.
  • Monospace.
  • Fullwidth forms, which are well supported because CJK fonts carry them.
  • Plain letters wrapped in symbols or brackets — the letters themselves are untouched.

Usually fine, occasionally not

Widely but not universally available.

  • Script and cursive, including bold script.
  • Fraktur and bold fraktur.
  • Double-struck.
  • Circled letters and digits.
  • Small capitals, which come from the phonetic blocks and have gaps — there is no small-capital X.

Least reliable

Expect visible failures for a meaningful share of readers.

  • Squared and negative-squared letters.
  • Regional indicators, which may combine unexpectedly into flags.
  • Superscript and subscript, which cover only some letters.
  • Heavy combining marks, which are commonly stripped, capped or clipped.
  • Anything in a username or display-name field, regardless of style.

Scripts other than Latin

The mathematical alphabets cover Latin letters and, for some styles, digits. There are no styled equivalents for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Cyrillic or emoji. Text in those scripts is passed through unchanged here rather than being corrupted.

For those languages, decoration that surrounds the text — frames, symbols, dividers and spacing — works well and does not damage readability or search.
